About Girls Secondary School, Awka


      GSS AWKA was formed by the Anglican Mission in 1976. According to records, late Chief Anekwe Molokwu was sent by the mission to tour several parts of Nigeria to sensitize people and galvanize support for the school project. In Kano, he met Chief J.N Obuekwe and Chief Chukwuma Anueyiagu. They formed a working/planning committee which includes Ozemena Onyekube, a tutor at D.M.G.S Onitsha who served as secretary, B.O Umerah, S.I Udeozo, D.N Nwadiogbu, Anueyiagu (Snr), J.N Obuekwe, Chukwuma Anuayiagu and Madam Odunze.
      A forty acre of land known as (Ugwu nwannunu) was given out by Amudo/Amachalla families of Amaenyi of Ameanyi Awka on 7th April, 1966 and the following right-thumbed as signatories on behalf of these families: Madam Anagbigu and Anochili Udenabo signed for Amachalla village while Ozo Nwankwo Ndum, Nwanaro Obu and R.O Okoye signed for Amudo village. Mr.M.E Chukwurah a licensed survey as #2 Anazonwu street Onitsha, did the site plan of the school.
      The untiring efforts of the committee led to the construction of the two classroom blocks and a boarding house which were handed over to Awka Anglican Communion for management, the first common entrance examination into school was taken before the fall of Awka town to federal troops on 17th February 1968, during the Nigeria civil war.
      After the civil war, another committee was formed headed by D.N Anueyiagu (Snr) to solve the problem of the school. Others included Chukwuma Anueyiagu - Secretary, B.A.O Umerah, S.L Udeozo, P.N Nweke, O Chwuogor and Monanu of Igbo-Ukwu town, the then principal of St. Paul’s College Awka. The school eventually took off in 1976 with Mrs. E.O Anyaduba as the pioneer principal. The motto of the school is EDUCATION FOR DISCIPLINE AND RESPONSIBILITY.

Our Vision is to have a school where there is no coercion/force yet everybody excels in morality and academic excellence. A citadel with enhanced serene atmosphere conducive for molding young children to attain high moral and academic excellence and become exemplary youth of tomorrow.
